Senate Provides Health Insurance for Families of Fallen Officers

JUNEAU – The Alaska State Senate unanimously passed a bill today that provides for medical insurance coverage for surviving dependents of peace officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.

“I made a commitment to a widow of a fallen officer – in the most respectful, caring way I know how – to make this a must-do project for this year,” said Sen. John Coghill (R-North Pole), sponsor of the Senate version of the bill. “I am glad to see the House and Senate have found a way to move this forward. This puts into law a methodology of taking care of the surviving spouse and children of fallen peace officers and firefighters.”

The bill establishes a fund to be administered by the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. The fund consists of a municipal employee account and a state employee account. Municipalities may elect to participate in the fund and bear the cost of the benefit.

House Bill 23 is now on its way to the Alaska House of Representatives for concurrence.
