ANCHORAGE – Senate President Cathy Giessel, R-Anchorage, today appointed John Binkley to serve on the Redistricting Board.

“I am pleased to announce that John Binkley has agreed to serve on the Redistricting Board,” said Sen. Giessel. “John loves Alaska and Alaskans. He brings a wealth of statewide experience to the table and, most importantly for me, John is an excellent listener. Alaskans will have many concerns about redistricting, and they deserve to have their voices heard. I am confident that John is committed to a fair process and will listen well.”

In 1998, the Legislature passed and voters approved a constitutional amendment reforming Alaska’s redistricting process to one lead by a 5-member citizen panel composed of a geographically diverse selection of Alaska residents.

The amendment provides that the “presiding officer of the Senate” shall appoint one member after the Governor has made his two selections.

“The redistricting process has the potential to impact every Alaska voter,” Sen. Giessel continued. “It is a responsibility I took very seriously as I searched for someone with a broad range of experience across our state, someone who understands that Rural, Interior, Southcentral, and Southeast Alaskans each have a diverse set of concerns.”

The Speaker of the House and the Chief Justice of the Alaska Supreme Court will appoint the fourth and fifth members of the board by September 1st, 2020.
